Messi Equals All Time Champions League Goals Record
All eyes were on Cristiano Ronaldo last night as he started the game against Liverpool on the verge of equalling Raul’s 71 goal Champions League record. Unfortunately, he had a rare off night in which he rarely threatened and ultimately failed to score.
Instead, it was Lionel Messi who tonight rose to the occasion, scoring twice away against Ajax. In doing so, he leapfrogged Ronaldo onto 71 goals, equalling Raul’s record in the process.
The real achievement will be in breaking the record, but Messi now has one foot over the line with Ronaldo inches behind.
The table below shows how things now stand in terms of the Champions League all time top goalscorers.
Top 3 Champions League All Time Top Scorers
Player | Goals | Appearances | Ratio |
---|---|---|---|
Lionel Messi | 71 | 90 | 0.79 |
Raul | 71 | 142 | 0.5 |
Cristiano Ronaldo | 70 | 107 | 0.65 |
