Barcelona Crowned La Liga Champions whilst Ronaldo puts one hand on the Pichichi
On the penultimate weekend of the La Liga season, Barcelona got the 3 points they needed to win the league title by beating last seasons champions, Atletico Madrid by 1 goal to nil at the Vicente Calderón.
And who scored the vital, championship winning goal? You guessed it. Lionel Messi! It was his 41st goal in the league this season, in just 37 games (he has scored 54 goals in 54 games in all competitions so far).
This is undeniably an incredible goal scoring ratio, but it is Ronaldo who all but wrapped up the battle for the Pichichi trophy this evening by scoring yet another hat-trick, against Espanyol. This puts Ronaldo on 45 league goals (in just 34 league games) with one more game to play.
So it’s a bitter-sweet evening for Cristiano as his Real Madrid team officially go another season without the La Liga title, although he has all but won another personal victory against his great rival Leo Messi.
Ronaldo has also extended his record for the most hat-tricks in La Liga history to 26 (Messi has 24).
With a possible treble on the way for Messi’s Barcelona, you’d imagine he will be the happier of the two players this evening.
